DETAILS: The Funk is coming back and Uncle Jam wants YOU! San Francisco’s beloved Nufunk party “Funkonnection” is coming to WMC with an evening of live and dj music that is sure to set the dancefloor on fire. Featuring Miami’s beloved FutureCuban band the Spam All Stars playing all night in the front and some of the world’s greatest nufunk Djs in the back, this FREE event will be a welcome respite from the 4x4 electronic grind.
DJ Le Spam & the Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create a sound that is unique – an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as we look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show -- we know something very special is going on. The Spam Allstars are road warriors -- a touring band. Perhaps one could say they are taking an “old school” approach to sharing their music. For each performance they have, every music lover they meet, every time they bring yet another musician into the fold for a collaboration – Spam Allstars celebrate their opportunity to work as musicians and be creative each day.
Kraak & Smaak , the Dutch breakbeat production trio, is heralded as one of Holland’s most important dance acts. Their organic breakbeats, full of brass stabs, guitar licks and a future-retro- phat-production-sound has drawn comparisons to Mark Rae and Thievery Corporation. Performing at over 120 headlines shows in Europe last year, Kraak & Smaak have been together for seven years. Oscar de Jong is the main knob twiddler of K&S but also plays guitar. Wim Plug has spun along side Portishead dj Andy Smith and Depth Charge’s Saul Kane. Mark Kneppers claims to have the largest record collection in all of Holland, from jazz to hip-hop and everything in between. As DJ Knuppelhout he has played at all the major venues from the Netherlands to Belgrade and mixed breaks for legendeary Dutch label, Fresh Fruit, in 1997. Jalapeno Records and Kraak and Smaak have kick-started a scene that isn’t all about the fit-inducing breaks that you sometimes come across – their 2006 album, Boogie Angst, fits everywhere. Its dance music to listen to, new music with old-school sounds, and funk for the next generation.
ABOUT FUNKONNECTION: Some of the greasiest characters in the Bay Area have joined forces to change all that. Motion Potion, (he of the legendary Nickie’s “ Whatdafunk” parties and SF Funk Festival), Tal M Klein (the nufunk producer whose Plastic Starfish album follows 4 killer recent funk Eps) and Malarkey (who single-handledly revitalized the North Bay funk scene with his “ Juke Joynt” parties) have made a solemn pledge to the memory of James Brown to help his legacy live on.
In its first 5 months alone, Funkonnection has featured legenadry artists working to bring the oldschool sounds of the ONE to the dance-floor with modern production. They have included Ursula 1000, Afrika Bambaataa, Allgood Funk Alliance, Mr. Scruff, Kraak & Smaak, Fort Knox 5, Wicked Lester, Thunderball, Mat the Alien, Neighbour, Romanowski and many more…
This is a 21+ event.
