NorthEast Folk 'n Roots
Everything folk: roots, Americana, blues, bluegrass, newgrass, traditional, folk rock, blues, R&B and Celtic music and allied forms of dance happening from the greater Boston / Cambridge / Somerville area out to New England and into New York and eastern Canada.
Postings of general interest are welcome, but please limit discussion and events to folk and roots music in the Northeast. Take discussion of other forms of music to other Going groups.
If you're not doing it already, resolve in 2008 to get out and hear live local music. As Jonathan Perry said in The Boston Globe 12/28, you owe it to yourself to investigate why the Boston area's "musical landscape" is "so consistently exciting, surprising and gratifying."
- Dennis Brennan, 1/2/08.

Scissormen
CD Release Party!
Nashville juke joint high rollers cissormen make a rare return to their original New England home to celebrate the nationwide release of their new album "Luck in a Hurry" on the VizzTone label. The album, which features guests Billy Conway of Morphine fame, Dicky Barrett of the
Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and pianist Teo Leyasmeyer, a veteran of Buddy Guy, Freddie King, Johnny Copeland and Luther Allison's bands, follows two critically heralded indie albums and a spate of international
touring, including a typically high-energy concert at this year's Bonnaroo festival. Rolling Stone and VH-1 contributor Anthony DeCurtis says that Scissormen's "Ted Drozdowski is a guitarist of spellbinding
invention and intelligence. His slide playing shears the skin off your bones, and he can unleash roaring gales of sound. But lyricism and musicality lie at the heart of even his wildest moments. I have never
listened to him and not been transported to a strange, beautiful place I've never been before." Ted says that what Luck in a Hurry's songs "have in common are deep roots, great big guitar tones and a lotta soul. They were performed live in the studio so we could keep things raw and
spontaneous — the way we like `em."

Les Sampou & the Tin Angels
Powerhouse vocalist and acclaimed ongwriter Les Sampou has easy command of a full-range of American music styles from old time country-blues to folk to R & B and Motown to Rock and Pop. Fresh off a high-profile show opening for the chart topping Nashville duo "Sugarland," Sampou has been
causing a buzz throughout the region both as a solo act and with her band, The Tin Angels (Mark Cunningham - guitars & vocals, Dan Deleo - upright bass and Jim Weston on drums). Les takes Americana history and
weaves her own songwriting style through it all. Their repertoire includes old and new original material along with traditional and modern selections to create an exceptional evening of music audiences will talk about long after the lights go down.
"Sampou is a chanteuse with a voice capable of ripping off rafter-raising blues tunes and then turning even grand concert halls
into house concerts with her intimate balladry." - Boston Globe.
"Few of today's top songwriters produce more compelling or distinctive music than Sampou." - The Patriot Ledger.

Given that we're nearing the culmination of the Election Season, are you as discontented as I at the outsized expense of our elections? Well, taking my duties as investigative folksinger very seriously, I uncovered the identity of the individual responsible for the state of elective expenditure, and though I'm unable to reveal this person's identity, I've condensed our interview into a song which I call 'The Entomology of American Participatory Democracy (The Lessor of Two Weevils).'

March, 2008 ushered in the sixth year of war and occupation "without end" on Iraq. In an act of arrogance and impunity, Congress in a bipartisan vote approved another $162 billion in funding for the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan. The stepping up of threats against Iran and the increased likelihood of a U.S. troop "surge" into Afghanistan point to an imperative for action and an independent voice from the peace and justice movement.
In light of these developments, grass roots forces from around the country gathered together at the end of June for the National Assembly to End the Iraq War and Occupation in Cleveland, Ohio. At the conference an action plan for the months ahead was discussed and approved in a democratic vote. As part of this plan, over 95% voted in favor of supporting pre-election protests being organized in cities and localities around the country on October 11, 2008.
In Boston, the October 11 mobilizing committee has been formed to organize a mass
demonstration on Boston Common around the following demands/slogans:
• STAND UP FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST.
• STOP THE WARS AND OCCUPATIONS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN.
• BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW.
• MONEY FOR JOBS, EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE AND HOUSING …NOT FOR
WAR AND OCCUPATION.
• NO SANCTIONS OR ATTACK ON IRAN.
• STOP THE RACIST SCAPEGOATING OF ARABS AND MUSLIMS.
• STOP THE ASSAULT ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES.
It was on October 11, 2002 that Congress approved the "Iraq War Resolution" granting the Bush administration authorization to invade Iraq. The weeks ahead will continue to be filled with debate as the election campaigns gear up. Instead of being spectators who watch the media pundits put their spin on the political pronouncements of the candidates, we will be actively engaged in injecting our agenda, the antiwar agenda, into the intensifying debate.
